Misunderestimated has it right. Rheum is the correct medical term, never heard of someone being "Rheumy eyed" ? meaning sleepy looking.

I know it the result of microscopic creatures that eat the dirt off your eyeballs at night.Just like skin mites that eat dead skin cells.
