I guess the effectiveness of any good horror film lies partly in the film itself but also with the viewer. By that I mean its success is partially circumstantial, dependent on what mood you're in when you're watching it, and where you happen to be.

With that in mind, the best horror movie I've ever watched is probably The Shining. It was Halloween and I was watching TV and came across it while channel surfing very late in the evening. I had never seen it before, so I decided to watch it. I happened to be completely alone in a rather large house which amplified everything I was watching on-screen. There are very few jolts in the film, just a quiet horror that slowly creeps in, especially when you're sitting there alone with your own imagination. It's in the overall atmosphere, the emptiness of the hotel, and all the little details that conspire to create that feeling of dread. On a different day, watching it with other people, or during daylight hours, it might not have affected me at all... but sitting alone in that dark house at two in the morning as the last frames of the film played out? *shivers*

House of 1,000 Corpses is a fantastic culmination of all classic "horror" movies ever made. It contains no suspense, no cheap thrills. It's raw, brutal, plausible, ugly horror.

My life is the best horror movie I have ever watched, and I am being sincere not sarcastic. It is the bloodiest thing I have ever seen in most aspects, it surely is scary as heck as well.
