You know, to find out what present they would most appreciate / figure out what size clothes they wear / check for what time they may be free for a surprise birthday party / look out for any weapons of mass destruction?

the most inconspicous way is not to spy on them at all, just take your chance about their likes and dislikes or to be sure use common sense and just ask them straightforward!

For the purposes you mention (shopping for a birthday gift for them, finding out what their clothes sizes are, etc.) the tactic I would use is to just go out shopping somewhere with them a few times. Pay attention to what they spend time looking at, and are interested in. If you are in the clothes section, same thing, and try to notice what sizes they pick out to try on. Don't let on that you are trying to figure out what to get them, of course. Just make it seem like you are shopping with them and browsing.

As far as finding out what time they may be free for a surprise b-day party, you might want to see if they could meet you and your friends at a certain place and time to get together, but don't let on that it's for their b-day - maybe even have someone with them who will make sure that they actually show up and not cancel out at the last minute.

Mmm, spying without getting caught can be tricky.

First of all, think it through and plan ahead - what to say if caught etc.

Second, plan in action. Offer to go to persons house to , for example, make dinner whilst they are at work or finish a decorating project for them, again whilst they are at work.

WMD are usually stored in the cellar i have found, but people don't like it when you mess with their WMD or interfere with their plans for world domination.
