Every one dreams all the time, just some ppl don't remember it. not dreaming is like telling some one to stop thinking - you can't!.
Your brain is you! and just like you, it does not want to wake up scared. having a nightmare is an indication that your mind is not ready to be awake. The best thing is to go back to sleep. turn the light on, pull the blanket over your head or my personal fav snuggle, but get up is not the way you brain want to start the day.

Step by step:
Make a cup of chamomile tea.
Read a bit.
Stretch, a bit of pilates.
Count sheeps.
Count the fences that they jump over.
Make another tea.
Maybe run of the spot.
Have a calming bath.
Some lavender oil.
Start again from step one.
By now you should be tired enough.
Rest and sleep.

The statement you make is you don't want to sleep until it's light out. You could try to sleep with your bedside light on, or keep the hallway light on with your bedroom door open, it is like having light outside.

Ok ... go do something till you get tired again. Then, when you're clear aheaded, rationalize whether you have anything to be afraid of and deal with it.

first thing is, why can't you go back to sleep? is it because you you can't get a problem out of your mind, a nightmare, fear...?
all you have to do is to face it
