JPEG.. its a photo imaging standard
bitmap is an obsolete vector graphics format.. and isn;t particularly good at handing photos
you could consider using PNG, or possibly the cameras raw or native format.
in any event take multiple electronic copies of your images.. for the day when you disk drive goes to the electronic scrap heap in the sky. take frewquent backups.. there are doubts over home written CD's & DVD's as to their longevity. So back up frequently.. at least anually.
one thing to bear in mind is that unlike conventional film there are no negatives once the print is made... digital data is easy to manipulate, but its also easy to delete and easy to loose through hardware failure or even an accidetnal delete or disk format

jpeg is much smaller best way to do it . bitmap is huge file .

jpeg is best to save on you pc but photos take up a lot of memory/disc best way to save then is to a cd/dvd disk and not on your pc

I only save a few on the PC and save most of them on a disc. Then your space is not used up at all.
