Yes. It's because, anymore, everyone has their iPods or MP3 players with them, so they have their musical needs satisfied. Whereas, in a world without instant gratification, people had to whistle to gratify their musical need.

Yes yes and YES! At least judging by the fact that I almost never hear anyone under 60+ who can whistle musically (the melody of a piece, not the words if you think of whistling a song). I always stop and listen when I hear it, it's so unique! I do know one guy that just turned 40 who can as well. Is it just me, or does it seem that whistling musically is more of a male thing than female thing? I know more men that whistle for some reason.

Sadly I think it is. Do you know when I was a child I went to a concert where the top of the bill was a whistler. He had the whole audience mesmerized. Whistlers would also appear on TV a lot and the day after all my friends would be trying to whistle....You don't see that anymore

The only person i knew that could really whistle well would have turned 83 now. He died. So, for me, it is literally a dead art.

It may well be, but I was whistling to the song playing on iTunes when I read this question. Coincidence? Probably not. I whistle sort of often. :)
May God bless you.
