you can make scarves, baby blankets, or purse or bag, just make it in peices and sew them together. or you can find charity knitting websites and they usually have easy patterns to make things to donate.

I knit mostly just to keep my hands busy...doing something productive instead of something destructive (eating, etc). I do scarves exclusively, cause I'm kinda lazy and I only know how to do stockinette. Nothing else really looks right in stockingette.

try looking up websites for dishcloth patterns . That way you can try new stitches (besides stockinette) in small doses without having to worry about the exact size something ends up being ... because obviously, any size will do, for a dishcloth!.

You can swap or donate them. Shelters for women & families might even take 100% acrylic ones for use in the kitchen, or even give them to the residents as bathing cloths.

Who, me? I don't knit, but I used to watch my ex-wife go. She said that knitting socks was one of the harder stuff to do. Join a group, if you want to: http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=knit

She made a jacket, I think. And a pull-over sweater.
