I imagine it brings to mind flies humming around something rotten - it implies it's alive with bugs.

We do? I've never said that nor hear anyone else say it. Are you from the south. I know the have a lot of weird colloquialisms there so it might be a regional thing.

When someone passes wind it is sometimes called 'Hum dinger'
