Hi, I'm not Omani but I taught there for three years and am going back in September for another year. Oman is a beautiful country and is generally very welcoming to all visitors.

As regards religion, the best way to avoid discrimination is not to advertise your beliefs. Personally I never discussed my own religious beliefs, either in or out of the classroom, and that worked just fine. Practise your religion discreetly and be respectful of other peoples beliefs and you won't have any problems. That said, the Omanis really are very tolerant.

As regards race, you may suffer some discrimination, but that can happen anywhere, to anyone. Oman has a very international atmosphere, with every skin colour under the sun well represented, but of course there may be some who discriminate. I have seen some discrimination, particularly against Indians, Pakistanis, Phillipinos, and Sri Lankans, perhaps because it is generally people from these races who perform the more menial work (maids, cleaners, etc). That said, I've also experienced some discrimination myself, as an Irish person. With such a mix of races, it's only natural that people will have some preconceptions about you. In general, however, the Omani people will be respectful to you if you are respectful to them. And I find it wonderful to live and work in such an international environment.

First of All, why you just think they would suffer any discrimination for that being Somali Sunni Muslim?! In fact, you have three strong reasons to be most welcomed for that you move to Arabic Muslim country.
With all nice and true words were mentioned above about Oman, Oman is land of peace and love .where you will feel more safer and happy than anywhere else even home!
Waiting to seeing you soon here and you will live it and will wish to stay forever.
Note: what being said about little discrimination of some nationalities that is not fully true for that if some people mistake it doesn't mean all are same ..
Wish you all the best
Proudly Omani
