It's possible but you'd have to prove the mother was some kind of crack whore. I'm not kidding, you'd need actual proof that she was not fit to raise those kids (testimony from police, child protective services, etc). Just accusations won't be good enough. Also, even if the judge determined she was an unfit mother, he/she would see if there any other blood relatives that would be willing to step up and take the kids (the kid's father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc) before they would consider you.
Also, one of the immediate things that the mother and her attorney will bring up is if you're using this as a weapon to get back at her. If that is the case, you ought to be ashamed of yourself and let it go. You NEVER use kids as a weapon to get back at an estranged spouse, regardless of what she's done to you. You better be prepared to defend yourself from that accusation, because it's going to be brought up.
Even IF you can prove all of the above and there is no one else that is willing to step up to take the kids, the judge may not award them to you. It is possible that you may get custody but I'm not going to blow smoke up your rear end, it's a long shot at best.

It's not likely. In certain instances it might be possible. If the mother were proven to be, say, cooking meth in her house while the kids are there, the biological father is NOWHERE in the pic and there is no other family to take the kids...the stepfather might get custody.

Of course he has rights! Geesh, think about what you're saying?! You need an atorney to amend your custody agreement. They are his children too and he has a right to have a voice in ALL matters concerning them. Dopn't just hop up and leave with those kids without getting a written court order saying you're allowed to do so OR you just might find yourself losing custody in the end.

Really difficult but possible. The circumstances would have to include her being a really terrible mother to the point of endangering the kids.
The question makes me wonder about what sort of relationship you're in. It sounds bad. I hope everything turns out ok and I feel bad for the stepkids if the mother is that bad that you would even consider this possibility.

If the mother is physically or emotionally unfit to raise her children with proper care, yes. If not, don't worry. I know this cause my sister was in the same situation and there was no contest.

Yes, though the circumstances have to be in favor of such action. Example would be that she is unfit to care for them due to criminal action.
