Herms as in hermaphrodites? Some parts of the world they are called eunuchs. In India, there's a very dichotomous view on them. In ancient times, as recently as the Moghuls, they did enjoy a special status in the society. Sometimes they were thought to be endowed with supernatural powers, and instilled awe in people. Their blessings would mean a lot to people, but god forbid if they cursed you! In modern times, there is a lot of stigma attached to such people, they are ridiculed, and now for a persecuted minority. They resort to begging on streets, and people in general do not want to think about them. A lot of non-profit organizations have been working to uplift their status in the society, but I believe there will be a lot of battles to be fought, and a lot of darkness that surrounds eunuchs needs to be cleared before they can gracefully claim the rights that has been denied to them for ages now - the right to live as part of the mainstream.
