I need help troubleshooting my fuel gauge in my 1966 Mustang, it says it's always FULL with hardly any gas in the tank, but when I turn off the car the meter goes down to empty as if it works. What can I check to see if i need new parts or if its a quick fix?

it sounds like the sender unit to me. next time you know that your fuel level is low, remove the sender from the tank, and check to see if the float arm is moving freely. because it's an old car, moisture in the tank can cause the arm to seize up a bit. this is a common problem and this part can be bought brand new from many mustang parts suppliers, and can easily be swapped in a matter of minutes if you're familiar with it. in case your wondering where it is located on the tank, it is towards the front of the tank, underneath the car, with a single wire (yellow from memory) running from a hole in the boot floor to it. and remember, the fuel level has to be low before removing the unit, or you will lose a lot of fuel from the opening when you remove it. (some tanks have a drain plug fitted which can make the job a lot easier) hope this helps.

Check 2 C if the wire on the sending unit is connected ! First ground the wire & C what the guage does- THEN disconnect the wire so it's not touching ANYTHING - IF U have a Full sweep from Empty 2 Full, then the sending unit in the Tank is bad - UNLESS the FLOAT on the UNIT is bad - alot of older [fords] had replaceable floats ! BUTT U would have 2 find a Counter Person that knew SOMETHING about fuel sending units & not just a parts person that can ONLY use a COMPUTER & has NO idea what a Catalog is !!!

It goes down when you turn the key off because you're cutting power to it. Always reading full can be the wire to the sensor being shorted to ground. Bad sensors usually read empty or are erratic. I don't remember, but you might be able to get to the top of the tank through the trunk in that thing. Otherwise, you'd have to pull the tank to get to the sensor. You can try to track the wire back to see if it might be shorted out somewhere.

Check the sending unit in the tank. I would bet that it is shorted.
