P.S. Highly recommend you use offline techniques, also.
Example: Business cards with web address, local newspaper advertising, bulletin boards in grocery stores and laundry mats, ect.

Why?

Getting into the top 20 on Google will require long term effort.
Advertising will return quicker results.

To Your Success,

Creating a webpage is simple if you know how. You can use a web page editor (like Frontpage) to make basic (HTML) pages. If you want something more interactive then it is going to be more tricky since you'll need to program in PHP or ASP instead of HTML. Hosting is pretty cheap too. You can get hosting for around $5 a month for a small site....sometimes lower. I know 1and1.com has REALLY cheap hosting. Godaddy.com has good hosting too....but I think their user control panel is weird.

Getting in the top 20 in google search list is the tricky part because that requires a whole other skill called SEO (Search Engine Optimization). If the keywords you are targeting for being listed in the top 20 are popular, then you'll have to do a lot of work to get in the top 20. You'll also have to spend a lot of time finding people to trade links to...or you can buy links (from places like text-link-ads.com). If you want to learn SEO yourself, you can find books on the topic in bookstores. Just search "Search engine optimization" in Amazon.

If you are lazy you can just pay to be listed for certain keywords. These are Pay-Per-Click. Do you know about them? You'll pay from 5 cents up per click. The good ones are Google (adwords.google.com) and Yahoo (Overture.com).

It is fairly striaghtforward to build a simple, basic website yourself. There are plenty of software applications that allow you to create What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) websites (e.g. Frontpage) but a google search will throw up a lot more. You can build one yourself.

There a series of books called 'A Dummy's Guide to ......'. There may be one showing you how to develop your website so it may be worth a read.

There are also plenty of companies that will host your website for a fee (typically from £5 a month upwards); many of these will also develop the website for you as well for a further fee. I looked into using BT and they seemed pretty good. Although, I felt for what I wanted to do (which was just to sell a property http://www.purchasemyhome.co.uk and then give up the site), they were expensive at £5 a month. I just went for a pure webhosting company Madasafish http://www.madasafish.com/?ref=4240228 at £20 per year. They will also tell you how to transfer your website to thei host systems for publication on the web.

try the tips on my home page they may help you get started, though as far as getting in the top 20 listings is going to be tricky unless you pay for it!

http://www.garylsmith1973.homeip.net
my page is not pretty, it is only a basic page currently while i work on the rest of the pages and the site in more details.
the links on my page go direct to software publishers.
there is the link to get your freedomain name such as the format i use for my page., the link to get your freeware server software so you are then responsible for hosting your own website, so no need to worry about the reliability of a hosting company. the server suite comprises of a basic apache web server, an FTP server an email server.
there is also a link to get a cheap (for comercial use, free for domestic use) html design program.
to submit your information to the search engines you need to search for a good and reliable submission software. you can try http://www.softpedia.com where i found all the freeware listed on my site.
they have a lot more software that you may find useful.
you will need a good quality reliable computer with great security software also.
my system is and has been up constantly for several weeks (between essential shut downs for upgrades) with no negative problems such as spam or malware on the system.

running an amd sempron 3400 CPU with 2.5GB RAM, seagate hard drives. and a basic brodband connection. Why pay a hosting company when you can have full control of your site yourself. Besides which with you taking full control over your site there is less chance for your domain to be hijacked.

Remember to that you need to be using strong passwords for maximum effect. you will also want to set up your email and FTP client properly and point to different folders for different user groups. this again will help against the possibility of being hijacked.

not long after i set up my server i found it was under attack, but the security was and never has been breached yet. remember too to change the passwords every few days to make it even harder for hackers to get in to your server.
a week system is one where the password is never changed and or with a simple password.

good luck.
