This is a practice done in the past China where women feet are tied with cloth at a young age to prevent it from growing. The length of the feet is about 3 inches. It is said to be beautiful. But it is used to distinguish the maids from the rich women. If the lady is rich, then she don't have to anything and therefore can afford to bound the feet.

Nowadays you still can see old Chinese women with smaller feet but bigger than 3 inches. These women had remove the bounding when they migrate or when the communist took over China.

Bound feet are feet that are wrapped up to make feet look smaller, because the Chinese thought that small feet were a symbol of beauty. I think it was banned in like the 1940's.

It's from ancient China, allegedly by a concubine of an Emporer. The sight of a woman teetering on her feet was supposedly erotic (for some reason) - they seemed vulnerable.

They start when the girl is about 2. Break all the bones in her feet and crush the arch with a stone. The girl will live forever with relentless excruiciating agony and never be able to walk properly.

If a woman/girl didn't have bound feet, she would be seen as ugly and unmarriagable and would be subject to humiliation by other women.

I've read that bound feet were considered beautiful, feminine, and dainty. The practice originated in Chinese performers of the lower classes, then later spread to the upper classes.

In reality the feet were horribly malformed and the toes were broken under and had grown into the arch of the foot over time. This caused incredible pain in the children whose feet were bound and significantly impaired them as adults. Over a billion women had their feet bound over history. That's monumental in terms of human suffering. :-(

They had thier feet bound because at the time they thought it made them look like lotus flowers, a symbol of beauty. It also crippled the girl for life, making her incapable of walking any kind of distance, so it also symbolized wealth and power because they needed to be carried everywhere. So when it was done only the rich and aristocratic could get thier feet bound.
