The emphasis upon Hitchcock`s girth amuses me, particularly as it comes from film scholars and critics whom I consider plain (euphemistically-speaking).

As someone age 64 I can say for certain that in Hitchcock`s day it was ludicrous for a man to be pretty. And if a man was good-looking in a pretty way he always played it down. The only men whom one acknowledged were good-looking were models or filmstars.

AND moreover it was not uncommon for men, particularly American men or men who had emigrated to America (such as Hitch) to be plain or fat or both. These men generally had the most gorgeous wives.

When I met and interviewed Hitch, he had lost weight. But even when he was fat I shall assume his personality was the same.

He was ruthlessly confident; manipulative because he could; and very, very kind (because he could size you up in two secs)

I found him very sympathetic and got to like him enormously, although at our first meeting he did tend to bully.

I think Hitchcock's weight did interfere with his self image. That's why he created the fantasy figure of the ice cool blonde in his movies. Hitchcock could never have that kind of woman as he was so ugly.

In desperation, he exposed himself to Tippi Hedren and she insulted his weight. He punished her by making her do painful scenes in "The Birds" over and over again. Do you still think he was "very, very kind"?

You interviewed Hitchcock? Who are you?

I have the same birthdate as Hitchcock. If he was like me he has some fat years and slim years depending on the cheapness of the food. I used to like the black and white films he did the introduction for. Hopefully I am not confusing Hitchcock with someone else.

That is a good summary of Hitchcock. What is your question?

Incidentally. He had the luxury of being content with being short fat and bald because he had the compensating benefits of being extremely talented, highly intelligent and filthy rich.

I dont know if I agree. Hitch liked to schmooz his female co stars. Dont think he actually had affairs, but he had crushes on them. His wife was not glamorous but painfully, "plain".

With his power, he could have bedded lots of women so I guess he had a poor self image because if he didn't he would have slept with them and not just fantasised!

Being fat was his image. I agree with your comments. They broke the mould when they made him.
