I sometimes ask myself, "What are friends? Why do they exist? Why do you need friends?", but never truly reach a conclusion. Today, for example, my friend, S.N., asked me out to watch a movie with her and another friend. I wanted to go, of course, to watch the movie, but I have some family issues that prevent me from going. I knew my family wouldn't let me go, and asking them will only adulterate our relationship. I didn't want to explicitly reject S.N.'s query, so instead I uttered, "Umm, I don't know...I don't think I can go..." Her tone suddenly changed after my indecisive answer, and she professed, with a critical attitude, that I don't care about her, etc, etc. I do like her, of course as a friend, but sometimes I just feel that friends are obstructive, or antagonistic to one's life; after all, everybody is self-centered, in a way. But without friends, one will feel lonely, and, as a matter of fact, that person will be teased and abused. I know friends are significant, but what role do they play in our lives? Do we have to say "yes" to whatever your friend asks you to do? I don't know, but sometimes, I feel like friends use me for nothing.

I guess you should be explicit and say "no" with a good reason. Friends are there to make you smile.

Friends are whatever we allow them to be: confidants, sisters, brothers, pranksters, jokester and even family. I think if more people had friends their would be less need for shrinks. You have to think what kind of friend are you? Usually that is a great measure of how your friends are to you. Now i think everyone has people we call friends who don't return the favor very well--but we still care for them. And personally i'm too proud to call out to a friend if i am in need--but if i am needed--i am always there for my buds. The hassle of people--does not just apply to friends--people are indifferent. I know it's hard putting yourself out there and it seems to no avail--but i'm sure your friendship to someone makes a difference in their life--and hopefully at least one of your pals makes a difference for you--that's what its all about! Good luck!

If a friend is going to get upset when you say no and always expect you to say yes, then I would have to question myself if she really was a genuine friend in the first place.

i think regarding your friend - she probably thought that you were blowing her off

i think if you explain that you would really love to go BUT your family would make it difficult she would probably appreciate that you were not blowing her off.

she probably thought that you didn't want to go WITH HER rather than that you weren't able TO GO at all

as for me even as an adult my friendships are very important to me
