How am I able to have my iPod(80Gb) overwrite itunes, not the other way around?

I am getting really frustrated with this. What has been happening is when I rate songs on my iPod itself, then try to sync it with my pc, sometimes iTunes overwrites the iPod, and therefore the same songs I have just rated are now showing up on my iPod and on iTunes as not rated. Perhaps this is just some setting I need to change, but when I listen to 200 songs, rate them all, and then nothing happens, it is really frustrating. What I want is to rate them, sync with iTunes, and then I want my pc to also reflect the new ratings, or changes I've made. Any ideas would be really helpful.
