My new Sony NW-A1000 keeps disconnecting itself?

I have a new Sony NW-A1000 mp3 player. When I connect it to my PC it is recognised, but then continuously disconnects and reconnects itself. I have the up-to-date firmware, and drivers. This happens with the CONNECT player software and the SonicStage software. What is causing this?

Try a different usb cable as a start, could be a poor quality connection at either end.
