I overhear conversations in class and people always say this once in a while.

I mean i know it means to get hit in the stomach but why do they call it "knock the wind out of you". It doesn't make sense.

Actually, it does make sense. What happens is that when someone is hit in the abdomen, a lot of the shock is transferred to the diaphragm. That's the muscle that lies below the lungs, and controls the inhalation and exhalation of air. When this kind of impact occurs, the diaphragm is temporarily "stunned," and the person has a LOT of trouble breathing for a couple of minutes due to the pain and the sudden distruption of his/her breathing pattern. It LITERALLY pushes the air or "wind" out of their lungs, sometimes VERY forcefully.

I think this term is used when you are hit in the solar plexus by something and it causes your diaphragm to spasm, which gives you the feeling of being unable to breathe properly for a while, and sort of simulates the panic that you feel when you are suffocating (in the bad way ;) ).

So, it makes sense in that the wind (air, oxygen) is knocked out of you (you exhale when you are hit there), and you can't breathe it back in fast enough.

Its actually where you hit a person so hard the air that they are or have been breathing in is knocked or pushed out of their body. I actually did that to a guy unintentionally in middle school. As I was chasing someone else through the halls one day I hit a dude with the momentum of my body and for a minute it looked like he was having trouble breathing.

Normally when you get hit in the stomach, it knocks the wind right out of you to where you kind of gasp for air.
I had a wave hit my stomach when I was on a surfboard and I basically got the wind knocked right out of me. I didn't like the feeling of not getting air.

because sometimes when you get hit in the stomach, you feel like the air has been knocked out of you - like you can't breathe for a few seconds.

I guess because when someone gets hit hard enough, they can't breathe... :D

becasuse you are breathless and can;t breathe for a second so it is theoretically knockjed the wind or the air (another word) out of you.
