I totally agree with you. What happened was terrible but what really annoys me is that it is perceived that the white did it to the black when it is a known fact that blacks sold blacks into slavery etc. I live in Bristol which was involved in the slave trade. We have a large black community that are now demanding that the names of our buildings and streets are changed from anything related to the slave trade - but this is part of my history they are trying to eradicate. They are winning the battle too which is a worry. I feel that the press coverage is actually insighting racial problems between the black and white community which on the whole has improved enormously. Slavery was wrong and cruel but his happened so long ago and as you say, it was the white people who put a stop to it. If we are going to build a great future we need to look forward not back like this - it just brings everyone down. How can I be expected to apologise for the behaviour of someone hundreds of years ago. I won't.

That was then. This is now. How can I possibly be responsible for what my ancestors did 200 years ago, by taking black people from Africa as slaves. Some of my ancesters also abolished slavery and released the slaves. I live in Bristol, which was deeply involved in the slave trade. looking at the faces of "black" people living around me, I notice that not all are deeply black, some are brown, some are light brown, some are almost white. So should those people apologise, or receive an apology? Maybe I should ask for an apology from the Romans who enslaved the British all those years ago. So for the sake of harmony, I apologise to all ex-slaves reading this answer. Can we move on now?

The history of the Slave Trade is very complicated and in some ways touched every person in the land. UK was top dog in the Slave Trade - it's what made our nation rich and enabled us to start up the first Industrial Revolution.
It's only when you discover that such as Oliver Cromwell had two slave ships built at Depford, do you begin to realize just how far reaching was this horrible trade. It gets worse the more you dig. You suddenly discover that your dashing cavalier hero, King Charles II was a slave company owner being a major share holder of the slave island of Jamaica.
The history of the Slave Trade in UK is far worse than people can imagine. In the 1860s the Royal Navy were still stopping slave ships leaving the West African coast bound for the States with thousands of slaves. I have some photographs of a slave ship captured by the RN in c1860.
The Slave Trade is still very much with us today. I have discovered that some 40,000 sex slaves were used in Germany during the football world cup a couple of years ago. This comes from a German police estimate.
Any man who pays a prostitute for sex may also be having sex with a slave. Think about it. In addition to these sex slaves there are also hundreds of thousands [millions may be] of domestic slaves - here still in the UK. Child slavery is very common in slave factories etc.
In the 600-900s the Danes were sending English girls to Denmark as sex slaves. And, so it goes.

This happened 200 years ago and while I agree that it was a dreadful way to treat people, there is no way that you can change history.
Prehaps the time of people complaining may be better spent trying to stop the slavery that still exists in other parts of the world.

Does anyone remember what the Germans done to the Jews 60 years ago, is that on the same platform? We beat ourselves up over everything in this nation because the person running it (Cherie Blair) is making millions getting compo for people over things that happened centurys ago. We are an easy target because we are a nation of whimps who wont stand up for ourselves!

we need to look at history and present day. yes the uk had slaves but was the forst to abolish them. the rest of the world had slaves and in some parts of africa slaves still exist and not to white owners usually black, blacks were the first to start slavery, stealing christian pilgrims.

Why did the British ban fox hunting, the death penalty and the right to bear arms?
I wouldn't be "proud" just yet until they rectify these things.

If we were all made liable for the crimes of our ancestors everyone on earth (without exception) would be in jail - even black folks.
