This proverb dates from medieval times and is better understood when asked in its original form which is: Eat your cake and have it.
It means quite simply that when you have eaten your cake it is gone and the delight of having a cake to eat is no longer with you. It is a choice between the taste of the cake or the anticipation of it.

My Grandmother always used to say "You can't have you cake and eat it all", which made more sense to me than the other saying, since what's the point of having cake if you can't eat it...but only in moderation. Yes?

Whenever i make my home made cakes, i never get chance to eat any of them, the get eaten before they are cooled, so no for me i can't have my cake and eat it. He He

Mmmmm, I did last night. a lovely pineapple upside-down cake with cream poured on it. I had it on my plate for all of 5 seconds before I started to eat it. Yummy.
