Current RAM controllers running 4x 1GiB creates a bottleneck due to the DDR timings - causing stress on the system, which is why 2GiB sticks have been in development since the announcement of the Vista release. Current 2GiB configurations are not ideal unless you're running a server in which they will be buffered. Hopefully this will change in the near future.
2GiB sticks at 1T timing is ideal since 2T causes strain on the system regardless of how high-end it is. Though, 4 x 1GiB at 1T would also cause severe performance loss.
If your slots only support up to 1GiB, I would reduce the total physical RAM to 3GiB. 2GiB for ideal performance. It is most likely that you will not need the extra RAM as of yet, and it's only creating a potential performance loss.
However, on certain Intel chipsets, even 1T RAM is treated as DDR. Therefore, 2 x 1GiB 1T RAM will be treated as 2T anyway - so upping to 4GiB 1T RAM should only reduce performance slightly in that situation if not remain equal.
Windows XP Home and Pro SP2 cannot see 4GiB configurations. But, XP SP1 versions and Server 2003, as well as x64 systems can recognize it depending on the hardware configuration.
4GiB kits consisiting of 2 x 2GiB modules have been in development for a while that will not reduce overall performance on systems that support them. OCZ seems to be at the forefront of this development at the moment.

Since it is the RAM that handles the game more than the game that handles the RAM I would say you are mistaken.
No matter what, the extra RAM is a good idea because games and such are always being developed and it seems each new one uses more than the last. It will also come in handy if you want to use a CAD program on the PC or anything else RAM intensive. Suck it up and be glad you got it ;-)

No such thing as too much ram man. Althought 2 gigs is really plenty these days and for the next couple of years. but if you have 4 gigs, you'll be the envy of all your friends that know what that means.
=)
Good Luck.

don't remove it, you'll need it someday (when you upgrade your system to x64). 32 bit systems can only use 4 gigs of ram and can't handle higher, and that's when a 64 bit system comes in.

you only need 1 for ALL games.
plus all the top of the line video cards are way way too much for games. the most demanding games only need a 256 mb video card and 1024mb ram.

its not "more"...4GB is an ideal amount of RAM for pro. hardcore gaming. though it should not only the RAM...better have a good GPU, CPU and also PPU if you want good game physix.
