I don't think that there is much 'GOOD' music about these days. I think that if you are a musician in a group/band or are thinking of starting a group/band that you should listen to as many older styles of music, that way you should then be able to make really good music. After all, all the great groups/bands of the past always say that so'n'so influenced them. So it pays in the long run.

I think there are some fantastic bands around today, sure there are ALOT of awful ones, but then its always been the same - i love mcr, panic and muse, queen and escpecially the rhcp, but they are all very much mainstream bands.
and then i really love some of the newer bands that i dont doubt will become very big - the horrors, patrick wolf, klaxons, mystery jets - these are all great bands, and with so much talent around i am personally of the opinion that people that claim they hate modern artists are very much guilty of musical snobbery.
of course then there is also a less mainstream music industry that is thriving, if you like panic and mcr check out bands like the dresden dolls and kiss kiss, and reverend glasseye, and im sure you will agree that there is plenty of amazing music in the world.

I think that there is alot of todays music that get's passed off as music. But there are many bands that have been around for a while just gettint signed to big label companies and people are writing them off like they're just like every other band.
I personally listen to bands such as the used, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine, Atreyu, Taking Back Sunday, Rise Against, Kottonmouth Kings, Ramones, the clash, Aiden, From First to Last, 30 Seconds to Mars, etc.
Rap: Is Whack. Old school hip hop is awesome(every once in a while) but this new garbage that is flooding the airwaves is lame. Mims.... where do I begin?! He can't even form full structured sentences and it's selling!
R&B: Akon. That whining little girl is pathetic.
'I see you windin’ and grindin’ up on the floor
I know you see me lookin' at you and you already know
I wanna love you, you already know
I wanna love you, you already know'
Now imagine a 12 year old boy that hasn't hit puberty yet trying to sing this song. HEY! You've got Akon!
But this is my own personal opinion on that matter. Other people feel differently.

I like basically all the bands you said. Some of the newer bands I like: The Kooks, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol, the Killers, Arctic Monkeys etc.
I don't like R&B etc, but there are many people who do and I think it will become one of the most popular music categories in the coming years.

I think that todays 'new' music needs to go back to the old Days. Most of the time the bands are just bangin chords(Not all of them).Technically it isn't so great. I think that they should look back at the 60s and 70s and learn that there more to music than chords. Just look at Hendrix if you compare one of todays songs to a song he wrote you will see just how complex his song are. Muse is cool there is also this band called 'Cake' except i'm not sure if they are all that new.

I have been a music obsessed collector since the age of 8 (I'm 46) & I still find great new bands to listen to, you just have to dig beyond the radio & mainstream TV to find them. My current faves are Placebo, the Secret Machines, Muse, The Strokes, Matisyahu, The Vines, Jet, Gnarls Barkley, my buddy in New Jersey's band "Powervalve" (check them out on their myspace!) Happy hunting!

I'm 18. I don't listen to artists that formed after 2000... though I could probably say 1990 to be honest, can't stand them.
I like no newer bands, the odd song might be acceptable though.
