This day marks the day of both birth and enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Buddhists in Mumbai gather at the Buddhist Temple in Worli and at Siddharth College near Flora Fountain for a day of worship, prostration, evening meditation and fasting, culminating in lots of sweets.
Buddha's life and teachings have affected millions and he has even been revered as an avatar (disciple) of God by Hindus. Bodhgaya, the place of enlightenment, to this day remains one of the most sanctified places of pilgrimage for the entire Hindu world.
This makes for a very special day in Mumbai, and if you can capture the spirit at the temple or college, it's well worth it.
