I play soccer and I sprained my ankle in one of my games earlier. It hurts like crazy and usually when I go down, I get up quickly. I can't put ANY weight on it. I've sprained my other ankle before but it never hurt THIS bad. My question is, how can I stay in shape for soccer, if I can't walk? I need serious ideas please. Soccer means a lot to me.

sorry guys. I didn't mean to be 'derrogitory' when I said crippled. Just an expression. I actually have no idea what derrogitory means, but I have good guess. Again, sorry.

First of all, don't worry about using the word crippled. That's what you are at this point...lamed up. It is not derogatory to use that word properly, which you did.

Hopefully you are elevating that ankle at times during the day, to help reduce the swelling. That will help in the healing. A badly sprained ankle can be as debilitating as a broken ankle, depending on what degree of sprain it is. Are you taping your ankle during the day to prevent further injury?

First of all, listen to what your doctor told you. You should have had an x-ray done; if you didn't, go back and ask for one. If you were told to stay off your foot, don't keep trying to put some weight on it. You should ask your doctor if there's a sports clinic you can go to, to get some training on how to keep yourself in shape and which exercises you can do. Even one consult with a physical therapist would help. If your doctor knows you're an athlete and need help staying in shape, he may have suggestions for you. Don't be afraid to ask him for further help.

Because of your badly sprained ankle, you may not be able to keep in prime shape for soccer. Because it means a lot to you, you'll have to be sure and allow your ankle to heal completely so you can play in the future. Good luck!

Have you seen a doctor? Are you sure that it's simply a strain? It's easy to tear ligaments and even have fractures from soccer. It's a tough game. If you haven't seen a Dr., you really should see one to be sure you get the right treatment.

You could do exercises which don't require putting weight on your injured ankle. There are floor exercises like leg lifts, crunches and working your upper body with free weights. I wouldn't worry about getting too out of shape during the time a sprain takes to heal.... if it is just a sprain...

blue,

Soccer players must be some of the best conditioned athletes anywhere. The running is non stop.

You want to keep your condition, and that's understandable...however, you'll definitely want to keep off of that ankle so that it may heal properly. Perhaps swimming laps will allow you to maintain your stamina...have a talk with your doc first before starting something like that, just to make sure you're not causing more injury to your ankle.

in my experience, just getting around on crutches is exercise enough! that was a rough 2 weeks i had on crutches. my doctor advised me to spell out the alphabet in capital letters with my bad foot b/c that will help strengthen the muscles in your foot faster.

You are not "crippled", you have an injury. It's a very derogatory term to say "cripple".

You can't really do anything if you can't put any weight on it. Do some stretches every day or something. I dunno. I don't play soccer much. Sorry.
