Sounds like a pretty old machine. Chances are that the memory type of the memory stick you bought does not match the memory type your motherboard needs.
First identify the memory type you need. Since you already opened your machine, note the information on the old memory stick. The manual of your motherboard usually contains the momory type information, as well. If you do not have a manual, try the website of the motherboard's or computer's manufacturer.
If the memory type of the 512MB stick is wrong, try to exchange it for a correct one - if availble. Take the old stick with you and all the other information you collected ;-).
If the memory type is correct, take the stick out of its slot and remove all dust from the motherboard. Then retry. The motherboard's manual might have something to say about which size should go into which slot. If you used the wrong sloty, try a different slot accordingly.

Make sure you have the right kind of RAM. Pentium III usually is pc100 and SDRAM. Do you have just one 512 stick or 2 256? because most Pentium machine the banks for memory must be full to operates. So, if you have 128 before you probably have two sticks with 64 each. Check the manual too see if your MOBO can handle 512.

no longer even close for Assassins Creed. you will need 1GB ram, REQUIRED 256MB image card with 3.0 shader - REQUIRED and a minimum of a center Duo Processor - REQUIRED. stated of direction is plenty larger! It sucks, my pc can no longer have the skill to deal with it, and that i've got been waiting a 300 and sixty 5 days for it!! Upgrading RAM and Video card isn't any vast deal. however the Processor??? Ugh... i do no longer think of my spouse will agree that a $500 improve is nicely worth it for one million sport.

Use System information in System tools to find out what motherboard is fitted then check the spec at the manufacturers website to find how much RAM you can install and what type of RAM you need.
