Boil 2 quarts of water, add 4 or 5 tea bags. I use the cheapest tea I can find. Let mixture cool and remove tea bags. I use a microfiber mop but for stairs you will probably want to use a cloth. Wet cloth and wring out till just damp. Wipe down the stairs. No need to dry. Your stairs will be clean and shiny.

be careful about using furniture polish (pledge) on stairs, makes them slippery.
try lemon dish soap and water, use a rag to dry, don't let the wood stay wet too long.

What finish is on it?
If it's urethane, it will clean up with a damp rag.
Most varnishes require cleaners without water in them. (Does it turn white if it gets at all wet?)
Have you tried Pledge, or whatever lemon flavored furniture polish you have around the house?
