Okay my favorite ALL TIME book is "I know this much is true" by Wally Lamb. It's a big book, but seriously it's one of the best books you can ever read! It's just wonderful and changes your whole perspective on life! It's mostly about this man's life and his life is just aweful and everything is going downhill, and it's about him coping and accepting everything. Some parts are HILARIOUS, others make you cry, others make you want to punch a wall, and others will just make you jaw literally drop...you know, that kind of book :-)
Another is "She's Come Undone" Also by Wally Lamb...also a great book that you won't be able to put down! That one's about an obese girl who just eats her way through her problems and ahhhh! That book was actually just an emotional wreck...it was kind of a depressing read I mean seeing life through the eyes of a morbidly obese person and the stuff that they have to go through everyday but at the same time, very enlightning and just opens your eyes...and that book is extremely character driven too...
And of course, Fahrenheit 451, kind of old-schoolish but it's an original and it rocks. Well good luck and I really recommend you reading "I know this much is true"---it's very character-driven, full of emotion and depth, and well you won't regret it, I promise :-) :-) :-)

Master and Commander by Patrick O'brian is excellent historical fiction about a British naval commander during the Napoleonic wars. The characters are so believe able and interesting that you can't help loving them. The story is fiction but the author was a profound naval historian and you'll learn a lot about the period. It's high quality literature and you will love it.

If you're alright with cyberpunk, I highly suggest Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. It's quite clever and very character driven, not to mention that it has one of the most badass villains in the entire history of literature.

Try John Grisham's works. I recommend "The Street Lawyer" or "The Partner" for a good character driven work.
