It makes me crazy when I substitute teach in pre-K and kindergarten classes in schools in poor neighborhoods and the emphasis is on lining up quietly. The emphasis should be on constantly reading to these kids, who will NOT get it at home. I will be student-teaching in the fall, and then will be a certified teacher. I want to read to the class while lining up for recess, which will not work. But how can I get in lots of reading time around the time constraints?

Use bellwork time as book time. You may not be able to read to the kids at this time, but if you can then that would be ideal. Perhaps the kids can come in, put their things away quietly and take a seat on the carpet where you are reading.

If you cannot read to them then allow them to get books and look at them quietly as their morning starting activity.

When you do stations make sure that you include book activities. My daughter always had little books that she made at this time. She got a new one every week. She cut them apart and then glued or stapled it. Then she would practice reading it to me. She learned to use the pictures to help her figure out the words.

Her teacher would use any free time to read a short book. For example; as the kids were finishing up the activities the teacher would begin to read a book. When about half the class was done they would sit and she would begin to read. The rest of the class would quickly finish up and then join them on the carpet. They worked quietly so that they could hear the story as they were finishing the cleanup. Anytime you finish an activity you can take 5 minutes to read a short story.

Also, ownership is important for these children. There is often NO reading material at home. Be on the lookout for garage sales, etc. which will have cheap books that you can give as prizes.
