I am recently engaged, and I have split custody of my 7 year old son from a previous marriage. The issue of his last name came up. What usually happens to a child's last name when the mother remarries? My fiance will not be adopting him or assuming any custody, the custody will remain split (50/50) with my son's father and I. I will be changing my last name to my fiance's.

There is no reason to change you sons last name just because you are going to get married again. Let it stay the same.

Does *he* want to change his name? Seriously. Ask your son what he thinks. Take his feelings into consideration.

I just got married to a woman with a child from a previous marriage. (He's 8.) Now, my situation is different than yours in that we have no idea where his biological father is, his biological father has never been part of his life, and if you ask Josh any questions about his father, he'll think you mean me. He is very adamant about wanting my last name.

The child keeps the last name of his father.

The name is tied to his father. Think about the father's feelings if you pressure for a name change.

If you get another divorce, will you want the kid's name to change again?

Can't believe this isn't common sense.

Why the hell would you even consider changing your sons' identity? Don't you think the divorce was hard enough on the child? He will grow up unable to make decisions for himself. Don't let that happen. Keep his name the same. For his sake.

You can not change his name (son) without his father's permission. Your name will change but not his. It's very common in todays families.

Leave the kid's surname alone, as his father's.
