First of all, I am a little shocked that the "M.D." (and yes I am using that term VERY loosely!) didn't agree with the ketchup bottle analogy. But let me try to break it down a little bit more... First of all it has nothing to do with the sperm. (Both in starting the period AND bringing on labor) The act of sex and achieving orgasm is what brings both on. When you have an orgasm your uterus contracts, usually multiple times even if you can't feel it. When you start your period your uterus does the same thing as if you were going into labor just on a much smaller scale.

Turn a ketchup bottle upside down, let the contents drain out, other that that little bit on the sides. Hold the bottle so that it is not completely pointed down, more a bit tilted, then smack the bottle really hard a few times, rattle it around and see if that stuck stuff comes out more quickly than it would if left to drain without the movement.
The same principle applies to your uterus.

Obviously the person below claiming to be an MD did not get the analogy, so here goes:

The hormones that tell your body to shed the uterine lining are already working the day before your period (gravity on the bottle in this example), so at that point it is very loosely adhearing to the walls of the uterus (the remaining ketchup). The motion, the movement, (rattling the bottle around) of the uterus during sex, and the dipping of the uterus into the vaginal canal during orgasm. will dislodge it a bit earlier than it would normally dislodge if the uterus was not disturbed, hence your period the next day. Sex will also cause your period to seem to 'restart' the day after it ended if you have intercourse.

OMG----- The answers I see here...
It's nothing to do with the ketchup bottle idea. Good grief.
Sperm has nothing in it that dilates the cervix either.
Though the 'action of having sex' could initiate your period, but only due to the stimulation of the baroreceptors located there, not the chemical components of sperm...
Please stop looking for medical help here...

oue period follows a cycle. although this cycle can also be affected by some factors, like medicine, stress, hormones, etc. so its possible that ur are already due for ur period and ur having sexual intercourse just occurred day before ur first day of period.

The stulation speeds up the process. It can also trigger child birth a little early. It isn't all that uncommon. Perfectly natural.

As far as I know, sperm has something in it which makes the cervix dilate....I have been told for years that if you are overdue when pregnant, that having sex induces labour because of the action of sex and the something in sperm which make the cervix dilate.....

I know what you mean though the same happens to me
