If a close family member is mentally ill, paranoid, irrational and refuses to sleep to the point of being *dangerously* exhausted, is verbally abusive and refuses medication

What can be done?

I think you might have grounds for involuntary commitment to a mental institution. Your relative is certainly a danger to himself and could become a danger to others if the abusive behavior escalates. I'm not certain of the laws regarding this in Canada but did manage to find the general procedure for accomplishing this. I can't imagine it would be much different in Canada but you'll want to look into that.

I would call social services....(on Monday) and they will direct you to the right people that can help
