Let me count the reasons:

1. Strong female lead that attracts males and empowers females.
2. It's almost as if the audience is part of the close friendship shared by the main characters.
3. Realistic situations that people can relate to, regardless of age.
4. Fantasy situations that entertain and allow us to exit the real world for the duration of the show.
5. Handsome male characters that make the female viewers (among some others) excited.
6. An ongoing story-line each season that brings the audience back.
7. Romance-- gotta have romance.
8. A spin-off "Angel" that attracted some of the audience, though it spoke more to the older audience.
9. Yes, some did enjoy the scenes between Willow and Tara.
10. A mystery that endured right up to the last season, one that was finally revealed and led to an inspirational and awe-inspiring finale that satisfies the story-line, though true fans of the characters will always want to see them again.

I could come up with more, but you get the idea. All in all, it was just a great show.

What's not to like! Probably most of us that watch and like the show also like the supernatural. I like that writer/executive produced Joss Whedon gives us a strong central female who never sees her own faults, any pretty much surrounds herself with people who know she's not perfect but are either too nice or would never say it to her face unless they're evil at the time. (ha)
The show is big on feminism, I'd also say. And I also like Whedon's famed writing style. Someone always has something witty and comical to say. Guaranteed. And it's always something you'd never thought you'd ever hear in your life.
The cast also was great. And who doesn't love the violence, the love, the drama, the heartache...
What I think is really great is how "real" the show is! They take normal issues from life and give them a supernatural twist.
For example, the episode in the second season where Buffy and Angel sleep together and he looses his soul because he experienced a moment of true happiness...real world connection: a girl has sex with even the nicest-seeming guy discover that he becomes a monster afterwards.
Also!
They even did a musical!! That's some pretty great stuff.
It's a great show, without a doubt. I don't care who says it isn't. It really is.

I like it, and I don't even know. The characters were self-righteous and annoying as hell. I wanted to slap them all, usually more than once an episode. And who talks like that anyway? The stunts were pretty good, but you could always tell when a stunt person was used. The show wasn't even all that original (it's not like a kick *** chick horror movie protagonist hadn't been done before), and a lot of times had similar storylines to other shows that were on at that time, especially other shows on The WB.

And yet, I like it. It's highly addictive. I wrote a paper on Buffy and Angel for one of my classes. To prepare, I watched every single episode from both shows as "research" (seven seasons of Buffy, five seasons of Angel, and yes, I bought all 12 DVD sets) and still wasn't sick of it. *shrugs*

So maybe when you find out, you can tell me. Seriously.

well its a lot of things: First the cast is great. everyone can act, and the chemistry is good between everyone. second the writers wrote the series really well. The way everyone talks is funny. Third they did things on that show that you wouldnt think they would. once more with feelings, which was the musical suprised me that is was so good. forth people like the vampire theme, star crossed lovers(buffy and angel), and there is the girl on girl action.

Because it was one of the best written TV shows with a great cast. Why do people not like Buffy?

Because it combines everyday adolescent issues with fantsy situations. The characters are easily likeable. The writers are extremely witty. The actors are very talented. Joss is a legend. Shall I go on?
