are apartments sound proof enough that I can't get complaints over baby crying at night?

Look for apartments that have a lot of families living there, there will be fewer complaints and you will be more understanding of their children's tantrums, too. Another way to do it is take an apartment on the end of a building, then use the bedroom at the end for the nursery so the crying will be the most distant from other apartments. But the bottom line is that babies cry, and we all have to deal with it.

You don't have to worry about that. People that live in apartments are pretty much aware that they will hear the other tenants at some point. And most everyone is understanding of newborns. And even if someone did have a problem with a baby crying, the chances that they'd actually file a complaint are pretty low. Relax... you've got enough on your mind without worrying about how sound proof the walls are in apartments. :) Good luck!

I wouldnt worry about it. First, hopefully your baby wont cry constantly for long periods of time, second, although apartments are connected by mutual walls, most are pretty well laid out, the mutual walls are usually kitchens or living areas and not bedrooms so its less likely to bother neighbors while they sleep. The best thing you can do is be honest with your landlord and try to make friends with your neighbors. I know I am a lot less likely to complain about anything a neighbor does if it is someone I know compared to a mean looking lady I have never met! I doubt anyone would complain though, who wants to sound like a jerk complaining of a newborn crying! Still you should be sensitive to the needs of others. Maybe if you have a baby who is fussy for long periods of time you could take your baby into a room that is farthest from a mutual wall and their bedrooms. Also its good to know their patterns, do they work during the day or at night. And remember what goes around comes around, if they complain about your baby they really cant expect a lot of cooperation on your part during their loud parties or when during their shouting matches can they?

Yes baby noises are acceptable. As far as soundproofed apartments...probably the really expensive ones (like $3,000-4,000. a month) But the cheaper they are the less sound proof they are. But a baby crying is perfectly normal "noise"...unless it goes on and on for hours, without intervention. The best thing to do is to talk with prospective landlords or apartment managers to find a suitiable place.

I lived in apartments with my first two children when they were babies and never had a problem.

This is the 3rd question I've answered about noise in apartments tonight!

honey, just move. everyone has answered tons of the same question, just phrased differently. you have a child, and one on the way. who knows, maybe the baby won't cry a lot? stop worrying, and do what's best for you and the kids.

We all cry sometimes. ;)

If it worries you you can always hang heavy fabric curtains (in light cheerful colors of course!) in the baby's room to muffle the sound a bit more.

Please do not start Mummyhood worrying about what others think. You get a place that you think will suit you guys (remembering prams etc) and you can have a nice, safe, family home. Good luck.
