I'm trying to find a guitar for my friend's 13 year old son. He knows he wants an electric rock guitar. He also commented that he's set on as "Spanish guitar", but I'm not sure exactly what he means. Any ideas?

Well, as far as I know, the Spanish guitar is both the style of playing and the instrument itself which are both different from the electric guitar. Spanish guitar is like the wooden version with 6 strings made of nylon instead of metal. Furthermore it is mainly been used to play Spanish national music and has now evolved and is equated with the Classical guitar (basically playing Mozart on a guitar). And it is amazing to hear the masters play that cos the speed of the fingers and the sheer sound they can produce from just one guitar is amazing. Anyways, the 13 yo most surely has the image of the modern rock stars in mind when he is asked why he wants to play and would probably prefer the electric rock guitar, cos unless he's really serious about practicing, and Bach, he will throw the guitar away after 2 weeks! But I suggest doing further reading on this...here's a starter page

(just click on the link and it should come up)

or just go to the music store and ask them (but it's usually a good idea to know something about it first cos otherwise you never know; they just might want to sell you the most expensive or worst product they have). Good luck to you!

A Spanish guitar usually refers to a classical guitar which was invented in Spain. But an electric rock guitar and a Spanish classical one is completely different- one is electric and the other acoustic. It looks different from a normal acoustic guitar too, with a rosette and rounder edges. He can possibly mean that the maker of the guitar is Spanish too.
