helium has only one shell (it belongs to the 1st period) and it has 2 electrons in it (its atomic no. is 2).

Good question. He finds itself in the group VIII of the per. table. Valence electrons are those that can form bonds. He does not bond naturally being an inert gas. I personally do not call the two electrons like valence electrons, but inner shell electrons. Thus He has no valence electrons.
