Actually, the Lakers won't have salary cap room at the end of this season. The Lakers currently have 58.4 million dollars committed for 2007-2008 season. Next year's salary cap is projected to be between 57-59 million. Once they sign draft picks, they are guaranteed to over the cap if they aren't already.

All the Lakers will have next year is mid level exception (projected to be around 5.3 million) and the lower level exception (projected to be around 1.8 million). For the Lakers to get under the cap, they would have to get trade Odom, Kwame Brown or Vladamir Radmanovic to a team under the cap to shed their salary. All highly unlikely to be dealt for different reasons.

With that said, it would be nice if they could end up getting a better PG.

Although I'm not into the numbers regarding the Laker's salary cap and all, I think that the Lakers will try to get a dominant big man next season. With the way things are going right now, they REALLY need a dominant big man in the low post. Andrew Bynum's still not quite there yet both defensively and offensively (although in a few years he will be).

So what I think the Lakers will do is try to get Kevin Garnett (who I think will leave the Timberwolves next season for a contender). How they free up salary cap space, I don't know. But I am sure that they will do everything to get Garnett. Kobe and Kevin are already good friends so that should make the transition at least easier. Imagine this tandem: Kobe on the outside, KG on the inside = Lakers return to become an elite NBA team and a contender.

To free up cap space, I think the Lakers will dump Radmanovic (after what he's done, he deserves the boot: unprofessional conduct). Plus, I don't think Kobe or KG would mind a little cut in the salary to make the Lakers a contender. Should the Lakers get Garnett, I'm sure Smush will still be manning the point for the Lakers next season.
