First of all, the "close AM" is not about coin grading but a variety of the Lincoln cent on the reverse of the letters AM(distance between them) of AMERICA. The "close AM" is a business strike style but applied to 1999-S and 1998-S dated proof cents resulting in the variety. It's difficult for me to describe without any picture aid, so I suggest you visit this site and see for yourself the difference.

What happen is that dies made for proof coins, were used on coins minted for general circulation. 1998 and 1999 are not the only years that proof dies were used, either by mistake or they still had some life in them and were used on purpose. The wide AM are the coins minted with the proof dies and the letters nearly touch in the regular circulation strikes. The A & M are in the word America on the reverse of the coin. The wide variety is considered an error coin for some reason and is in fact scarcer than the close AM. On some years the wide AM is a lot scarce than other years. Ken Potter is an expert on error coins and usually has the wide AM for sale. Go to www.koinpro.com to see his offerings and learn more.
