They are illegal because they cause dysfunction within society. People would lose ambition, and want to do nothing except take drugs.

Health, Public Safety are the main reasons.

Health because a large majority of users don't seem to be able to control their intake. It's why crack and heroin users go from 180 lbs to 75 pounds in body weight in a matter of months. Plus they OD all the time. The drugs are not cooked by professionals so any time it is used can be deadly.

Public Safety because some drugs cause people to literally go nuts, commit suicide or they rob & steal to support the habit. A crack addiction will cause a nun to prostitute herself to get another rock. Its just the nature of the narcotic.

Now I agree that marijuana should be legal. Other than giving folk weird eating habits I have never seen or had any experience with anyone high - other than driving - doing anything outwardly dangerous to themselves or others. It certainly cannot be considered a enhancing drug for anything except Dorito's stock. If regulated like alcohol I don't see a problem with straight marijuana.

I don't get why this question is asked 4 times a day or more!

Everything causes something, but not most the time to throw yourself off of the 30th floor!

Many drugs have a lot of life threatening issues and people do things like overdose and die, or in the case of Len Bias, take a few hits and watch your heart stop!

Booze and Cigarettes, though people are getting away from them, probably would be illegal if not used before there were any laws in this country!

You don't even know what you are taking half the time, what it has been treated with or contains, like rat poisoning!

Marijuana is a gateway drug! Alcohol is not!

Y'all are so full of crap! well, not all of you but some! It isn't about money and ****! It is about people being irresponsible and harming themselves and OTHERS!...Have you noticed that cigarettes are coming closer and closer to being banned all together? not just drugs! Don't you think our country has enough problems with drunk drivers and accidents caused by drugs and alcohol than to actually condone the ****??? Marijuana doesn't just affect the people doing it but it also affects the people who would be around it! Do you really want to be taking your children to the park and have to worry about whether they are playing a little to close to the dude smoking a blunt or if they will end up with a contact high? At least when people drink alcohol the person sitting next to them isn't going to get plastered just from breathing the air and at least with cigarettes they don't make you want to do stupid **** or better yet waste your life away! Marijuana is a depressant and imagine what our country would be like if it were totally legal and all our citizens did it all the time...We would become nothing! We would never evolve and learn and grow...You people need to grow up and start thinking about other things besides your own pleasure and actually think about the consequences for once!

Drugs are illegal for basically two reasons.
1. The do gooders believe that keeping them illegal will not promote SIN.
2. The revenue (non taxable) is enormous. You no doubt have in your possession currency that at some time was used in an illegal transaction. Not to say you were involved. Everyone falls into this description. Organized crime is boss. True whether you like it or not. Payoffs are the mainstay. It won't change. Got it?

Before answering, I went through all the answers here and have found very serious thought has been given to the problem you have raised. But I am still confused. Why is taking or carrying drugs branded as illegal all over the world( may be except few countries).
The Arabs behead a person using or even carrying drugs.

WHY????

you have a good point, you mention tobacco which is a drug, plus alcohol is a drug and the government makes millions of dollars per year from taxing these,i think you are right people should be able to smoke marijuana freely ,but the government wont make any money.in western australia where i live you are allowed to grow two plants, for personal use only.although considered illegal the law allows this,if you are caught smoking you get a small fine, people are happy with this as it keeps our jails free for real criminals

well lets not forgot why we have laws, two reasons of which i can think of on the top of my head are:
1/ To arrest people that break the rights of others.
2/ To protect people.

The second reason is why drugs are illegal, and can sort of be likened to the seat belt law. (Australia)

Also, cigarettes aren't illegal because they have been used by the majority for a very long time; they have been entrenched in society, so to speak. Moreover, alcohol has been used in society for a long time. So it could be argued that this is reason why they are legal.

hope that helps.

1. Other than the fact that addiction is a "progressive disease" whether over-using whatever.

2. Addiction is begotten through an "idle-mind" that it's only interest's are to not deal with reality naturally more so spiritually!

3. Politically it seems as if that industry were to discontinue. Lots of unemloyment would arise from such disaster. God forbid. That would probably benefit average Joe's and all the addict's that are used to the freebies would withdrawl from it!

Cocaine, marijuana and other drugs affect the central nervous system and one of the risks associated with use of these drugs include loss of motor control. A lil dosage of drugs may not affect you but it surely affect to some other people that is why it is against the law...
