I think that the Lock Ness monster is a cultural myth based on contemporary fascination with legends, dinosaurs, and large undiscovered species (see Bigfoot). But that's likely baloney because large species leave traces of their survival in the foods they consume and environment they live in.

Remember that the most famous photo of the Loch Ness monster was published on April 1, April Fool's Day.

I saw a special on television (not the best source) where researchers used sonar and speculated on how much fish it would need to consume each day to survive. In short: The thing doesn't exist, except in the imagination.

Why not focus on real, large, and barely understood species like the Giant Squid? Why focus on fantasy?

At one time people thought mermaids were real. It turned out they were manatees. The Loch Ness is most likely not real- it could be all manners of things, but a new species it is not.
