Get to Interstate 45. Go south. It ends at the Gulf of Mexico in Galveston.

I'd suggest by car. It'll take days if you walk and a few hours by Greyhound.

Galveston is a straight shot down I-45 from downtown Houston.

So where in Houston? If from points north or south, take 45 southbound. If from points east or west, take the Sam Houston tollway to 45 south (so as to avoid downtown). It is actually longer on 610 from the west.

When you cross the bridge, and come up to the 61st street exit (if you are going to any of the western beaches), skip that one, as it gets packed with cars. Take 53rd instead.

I've made the trip in as little as an hour from the west side.

If you are flying, fly into Hobby airport (code HOU) and NOT Intercontinental (IAH)...HOU is much closer to Galveston.
