I have recently started swimming to try and lose some weight and generally tone up. However, due to the fact that I suffer from arthritis swimming is the only exercise I can do and the only stroke that doesn't cause me pain is the breat stroke. I have been swimming every day for about an hour. Will only using the breast stroke while swimming allow me to lose weight and also tone up?

Hi thanks for the input but unfortunately there is no YMCA here and my personal trainer doesn't speak English as I live in Beijing. But at least I know that the breast stroke should help get rid of the case of saggy **** syndrome I have. :o)

Absolutely it will help you lose weight and tone up. You just may not tone as many different muscle groups as if you used a variety of strokes. A couple of other options:
1) Have you considered taking a water aerobics class at the local YMCA or health club?
2) You may also want to check with local rehabilitation centers in your area. Many that offer aquatic physical therapy also offer maintenance classes for people with arthritis. It's not as strenuous in terms of weight loss, but may help you tone up and most importantly help alleviate some of your symptoms.

Best of luck!

When i first read your Question i was going to say something stupid about hangovers drinking etc on a Sunday morn.
But this is a Serious Question and the only advice i can give is have a chat with your Physio or even a Swimming Coach.
Have a star Mate because you deserve it more than the people complaining about Hangovers

You will probably burn between 500 and 600 kilocalories per hour when you swim, regardless of the stroke. It will also improve your flexibility and help you to tone up.
