The bark is eaten half way around the tree. and they are big trees.

id put a fence around the trees so the horses don't debark any more you can put paint on the affected area my dad used to do it when squirels would eat the bark

Go around your trees with two layers of chicken wire and fasten it securely. Pine tar and some of those other treatments can poison your horses, and it may not even stop your bored horses from chewing the bark in the first place. Good luck.

Chicken wire sounds like a good idea to me... i wouldn't paint anything on the tree tho...Just let i heal on its own. Prevent your horses getting to the bark in the first place.

Apply plant surgical (pruning compound).

It looks like tar if black but may be in different colour also apply it so insect do not nest and destroy the tree.

To prevent further damage, put a fence high enough.

Go to your local nursery they should have what your looking for.. It should be the same stuff you put on your nubs after you trim you tree..
