No.

She is not qualified to be Chief of Surgery.

She is a fourth year resident qualified to be Chief Resident next year, but it will be another year before she is an Attending and can work without any supervision. Mark, Derek, Addison, and Preston are all senior to her and can tell her what to do and what not to do.

The fact is that Richard asked to retire but he has no reason to retire anymore. His wife left him for another man and right now his job is all he has. he'll reconsider and Miranda will be there to make sure he does reconsider.

But next year Bailey becomes Chief Resident and Meredith Izzie, Alex, George and Christina will all becone first year residents under her command. There will come a time when she becomes one of there attendings and they stay residents and that will stay that way until she either becomes the Chief or they work their way up to being her colleagues.

But that is many years from now.

Bailey is not experienced enough to be chief. She is still a resident.

But let's face it -- the current chief isn't going anywhere. He was only going to leave to spend more time with his wife. Now that she has moved on, there is no reason for him to quit. There has been nothing in the press about the actor's contract ending.

My guess is that this whole story line is just to set up tensions between the characters.

You know, I have actually been wondering that myself. I don't know if there is a pecking order that one must actually go through before they can become Chief, but I think that Bailey could also in the running.

I believe there is a good chance it will be Dr. Bailey. I had been thinking that for a while I, unlike many others, do not care for her character, but I think it will make a great show if she is appointed chief.

dr. webber is retiring on his own, no one is forcing him to retire. the new guy is just a guy who is applying for the job as chief.

and i hope (and think) that it will be dr. bailey in the end too!
