Epidural, the way it's done nowadays, is about as safe as it gets. First of all, they use different needles from the ones they used in the past. Then, doctors make sure they didn't hit a vein or an artery BEFORE injecting anything. And finally, they give you a small dose before giving you the whole thing so they can check for any side effects

I was also scared about an epidural! It was my first child and I had the mind not to have an epidural because of the effects it would have on my baby! But when the pain started I had one and let me tell you It was the best decision I ever made! I was able to enjoy having my baby and nothing was wrong with Julia when I had her! It's every women's decision to do what is best for them! Talk to your doctor Hun, but really it helps!

Ask to read the warning papers with the actual epidural med!! IT IS FRIGHTENING.
I'd do anything & everything to avoid an epidural. Try taking a HypnoBirthing or a Bradley class... be prepared and you will not need anesthesia for pain control.

Its deemed safe but it increases chances of complication and epidural given at or before a woman's 2 CM dilated increases chance of c-section by more then 50%
an epidural gave my mother in law severe migraine headaches
it inhibited my ability to push and left me dopy feeling and in all honesty i can't remember much of my labor and birth once the epidural was put in....
There are a lot of epidural horror stories out there just look em up.... Everything from numbing from waist up and not being able to breath, to spinal fluid leaking, to severe blood pressure drop (most common side effect which can lead to baby's blood oxygen levels to drop which leads to emergency c-section)
interesting fact America has thee leading number of c-sections preformed, 23% of women have c-sections, we also have the highest number of epidurals and pain meds given over 80% of women receive an epidural...concidence Think not
W.O.W. recently came down on the u.s. for this stating NO nation should have a c-section rate more then 12%
epidurals have also been proven to interfere with breastfeeding ... Babies suckle and mother let down reflex and milk production.
In the end its your choice but u really should take the time to weigh the risks u can pay a really steep price for temporary pain relief.
If you choose to try all natural here's some tips
-stay up beat (fear triggers the fight response which takes blood away from your uterus and organs and puts it in arms and legs which causes more pain)
-stay active, walk, squat, etc use gravity (baby's head forcing down helps your cervix open quicker)
-stay OFF you BACK!!! i know every time u see or think of a woman in labor u picture a woman on her back with legs in the air......big Mistake it is thee most painful position to be in, it puts the pressure on your hips and spine its bad bad bad (can also cause improper positioning of baby).
-warm water is a amazing wonderful pain reliever, it's called "natures epidural" for a reason, take a shower... Run a bath...some Hospitals even do waterbiths now. ( i had 2 water births and wouldn't do it any other way its amazing! )
-i also recommend if your going to take classes Bradley classes are great
Good luck

My sister had a baby one year ago, and she got an epidural, (this was her second time) and the dr. doing it messed up, he hit her spinal cord and she almost died, the few days after having her baby, she was in the hospital, without her baby, with a headache that needed morphine to stop the pain. she found out what happend was, because they hit her spinal cord her spinal fluid was leaking into her brain, and her brain was sagging, if they wouldnt of stopped the fluid from leaking into her brain she would have died, she said after that she would never get one again, but then later she said because the pain is sooo bad, shed prolly still get one.. hope this helps!
idk how often this has happend, or what the chance is of it happend to a person.

If it wasnt safe they wouldnt use it. If you want an epidural get one. Dont let anyone persuade you not to have one if you really want it. Just make sure to keep still when they are administering it.
