It means there using there sucking reflex. That is a good sign in development. They will also find there toes and a knee in a pinch if they can. The amniotic fluid rushes in and is good for developing the lungs also.

I seen nothing but myths in my Mayo Health Clinic books on suckling.

Most children do suck their fingers in-utero. It doesnt mean anything; they're just exploring their body and learning what they can do with it. Some people say that the kid will be a thumb sucker. Thats not necassarily true. My child sucked her thumb in-utero. She found her thumb and started sucking on it a couple minutes after she was born. But thats the only time I ever saw her suck her thumb and she's 19 months old now. She didnt suck on anything (except a bottle or the breast) until she was 3 months old. Then she discovered what the binky was for and she constantly had one in her mouth for the longest time! She would even carry extra ones around in her hand every where she went!

Well I just had a baby 8 mnths ago and my baby was sucking her thumb in almost all my ultrasounds! The doctors told me that this meant a few things!

#1 This is a sign of intellengence!
#2 would suck thumb and probably not take a pacifier and
#3 would be an active baby
This definitely means nothing bad! Your baby is fine! I wish you and your new baby alot of love and luck!

Nope! I have an ultrasound picture of my son sucking his thumb. He was born 5 years ago and there is still no thumb or finger sucking with him.

I really dont think its something to worry about. Its very normal to see that on the ultrasound. I also dont agree that just cuz they do that on the u/s it means they will do it later either. Sucking is a comforting thing to babies.

It means the FETUS (there is no such thing as an "unborn child" if it hasn't been born it's not a child yet) is sucking it's fingers.

Most babies do that before they are born, they're just exploring and tuning their sucking reflex, they're practicing. Remember that reflex is what keeps babies alive!!!!
So maybe your baby will suck their finger once they are born or maybe not, you'll find out soon enough.

Sometimes it can mean that they will be a thumb-sucker, but most generally it means nothing. Baby is curious and exploring their world and body parts.
