John Edwards has not a chance for President, with or without his wife's current condition. Hillary and/or Obama will get the nomination.
He does have another shot at a VP spot, and the sympathy garnered from his wife may almost guarantee it. We'll see.

His wife's not knocking on death's door. She has an illness that's under control.
That said, if Edwards hadn't teamed up with Kerry in 2004, he would have a chance. Instead, he and Kerry couldn't win a campaign against President Bush when it seemed that a trained monkey could have gotten the job done. People remember that, so he won't get the nomination.
I was going to vote for Kerry in 2004, but then Theresa Heinz showed up. I saw her, on national television, say that she and Elizabeth Edwards were there to keep the two Johns honest. That means that Theresa Heinz went before a national audience and said that she doesn't trust her husband to tell the truth on his own volition. I can't vote someone whose own wife doesn't trust him, let alone admits it on national TV.

I just had my mother die from Non-small Cell Lung Cancer that was stage IV when diagnosed. Obviously his wife is not that far gone since she is treatable (but not curable) and probably Stage III at worst.
One thing will remain the same...she WILL NOT be up to helping him and if he did love his wife...he would stop his candidacy and wait 4 more years. The man is definately young enough to wait if he wasn't so greedy. To think I liked the guy in 2004 (conservative registered independent) but I was way off on him and glad I decided to go with my gut in 2004.
With his decision to stay in the race...I am DEFINATELY all about bashing the man.
EDIT:
FOR BARRINGTON
The election has not happened yet...and is still OVER 17 MONTHS AWAY!!!!! to say he has ran this election without knowing is pure b.s.
I will give you 2004 though that is a MUCH different story.

John Edwards ran for President in 2004 and again this year. Neither time did he know that his wife had cancer, so I don't know why you think he was trying to get the "sympathy vote."
Yes, he could win, but perhaps not now.
Why do you hate him so much?

I've never heard ONE good reason why he has no chance... ANYONE? I'm still waiting for one?
he's white and from the south... do you keep up with history?
it's been a pretty good winning combination in the past for all poltical parties?
NOT ONE REASON in any post so far? "Because hillary and Obama are early favorites when the primaries are still like a year away" isn't a reason... am I the only one that's paid attention to primaries before?
is "because his wife is sick and she wants him to continue on" a reason not to vote for a guy?

Because people will do whatever it takes for that chance to have their name in the history book. Edwards thinks it's his chance to gain a vote, and he is taking advantage of it, it wont work. It's Clinton vs. Giuliani, hands down.

Most men who find thier family threatened by death of a "LOVED" family member turn to GOD.. This man turned to his god-- and had a fund raiser.. Everyone knows he is just pushing forward till he has enough to claim fed matching funds.. Then he will be out faster than sharpton.

i think that he was originally running just for the presidential position, BUT when his wife got sick, i believe they decided to continue just to get the message out to more people on the issues of cancer. it's not really about the pres. race for them anymore, it's an issue for his wife to help as many people as she can while shes still here.
