i have dark brown eyes-- i usually go for blue, violet or green liners. it really depends on the shadow colour that you'll be using. try this combo: silvery blue shadow with blue liner.

New shades of eye liner for brown eyes are Azure Blue,
Deep Green and Rich Plum worn with lighter shade of
shadow blended up to the brow. Lower lashes are under-
lined with same eye liner for large open eye look. New
mascaras in like colors are next to them in cosmetic
counters in varied brands, along with Black to stand out.

I like to put a light purple eye shadow (like lilac) on my eyelid, with a deeper brown in the crease and a light color under the brow. I use a deeper purple eyeliner. I don't use a pencil though, I use deep purple eyeshadow and apply it with a wet brush. Try it! It doesn't look as silly as it sounds.

I tend to go with a dark purple eyeliner when I go out; the purple goes well with brown eyes and makes them pop. I pair brown (which I know you said you weren't going for, but it's what I do) and yellow eyeshadow with this. It's not too dramatic, but it still looks pretty good.

black-classic. or dark blue. red is kind of scary...brown is kind of classic to, but i guess it's too natural, and you said you did't want that. you could try gray, it's a bit softer than black, and works well for the "smokey-eye" look. line your lower lid with white eyeliner. it makes your eyes look bigger. really-it does. you will be amazed!
