iron was not discovered, it is an element and has always been here. natural iron deposits are native, oxide, and sulfide forms. softer metals were work by people first because iron takes an extreme temperature, usually generated by blowing air over charcoal to refine and melt. the hardness of iron and later steel combined with the ability to be molded or shaped is a prized commodity so people eventually developed the technology to work it. we know of the ancient people that used iron because those implements have survived to be found today.
