Now you know what Republicans mean when they say we are living in a "Democratic Republic". We have a vast spy apparatus just like the German Democratic Republic, i.e. East Germany.

That happened during another repuglican administration also. Richard Nixon ordered the FBI to spy on protesters of the Vietnam war when he was elected in 1968. It might be a repuglican thing. .

J Edgar Hoover redux. Hoover was in charge for 49 years, so there is a long American heritage of spying on citizens with views.

This is the part that grabs me: "arrested protesters were held before their initial court appearances for up to six times longer than those arrested on charges unrelated to the convention."

Here's a short article that illustrates how the FBI has been abusing its power to get internet records. People can't talk about this because they're put under gag orders -- they will be criminally prosecuted for exposing the FBI's violations of the law!

This administration has pushed us back into the days of Hoover, Joseph McCarthy, commie hunts, and trashed freedoms. They've forgotten that they work for us. This President is charged with the responsibility of defending the constitution and protecting our rights. Being President means that he should want to behave like America's number one citizen... by championing our rights... not by thinking that he's the only one that matters.

Only people who are doing something wrong really have to fear being spied on. Look if they can possibly prevent any kind of catastrophe against our citizens than I am really not worried about it. Perhaps they should have to ask terrorists for their permission before they spy on them. Add to that unless you know all the people they were spying on how could you know if they were all law abiding? Do you even know who these anonymous individuals are?

Neo-cons hate a free society. They support all that is illegal and unconstitutional as long as Bush is behind it. Their short sighted, narrow minded approach to serious matters is astonishing to say the least.
